A newsroom that files before the workday starts.
A daily-news platform for the federal contracting community — and the drafting desk now being built on top of it, reading the day's sources before dawn.
The challenge
WashingtonExec serves a tight, executive audience in GovCon — long-form interviews, awards coverage, and event recaps, published daily. The 2023 build replaced a legacy stack that made publishing slow and indexing inconsistent. The constraint that remained is the one no CMS solves: a small editorial team still has to read the entire field every morning before it can write a word. What the newsroom needed next wasn't a faster place to type. It was something that does the reading.
What we ran
- Custom WordPress build with a tuned editorial workflow and authoring components
- Information architecture rebuilt around executives, companies, and sectors
- Structured data for articles, people, and organizations
- Performance budget enforced — Core Web Vitals in the green on launch
- In progress: First Light, a drafting desk that reads the day's sources before dawn and returns complete drafts in WashingtonExec's own voice
- Every draft arrives in front of an editor who accepts or rejects it — the review pass is the design, not a safeguard bolted on afterwards
